XLR Gathering in Colorado 2010

It appears Colorado would be a nice meeting place next year. All we need to do is agree when and where in Colorado and then we can start looking into lodging and activities.

I like the week before Memorial Day,May 24-29. The kids are still in school and it gives us an extra day for traveling home.

Do we want to stay in Colorado Springs,Denver,Estes Park or somewhere else? To me Colorado Springs looks like a good choice. There appears to be a lot of things to see in the area. Great driving trips.

We still have a few months to work things out.

I have heard that Estes Park or Fort Collins are other places to consider ... does anyone have some input on those areas? It would be great to hear the yea's and nay's from people who have been there or to other areas and why and what they did or didn't like. Since we have a year to plan ... before we lock it in, let's make sure it is a place that offers something for everyone. Places to drive to ... walk to ... a bit of history... photo ops ... shopping... great dining .... oh, and, hmmm yeah, of course I wouldn't mind a winery and casino in the area! If anyone has any pictures or recommendations (or warnings!) that would be great too. Just like we found a jewel in Texas (who knew?) like the River Walk, it would be great to get it right in Colorado too. Your thoughts???

I agree, we have a little time so we should look at all of the options. I don't know if we will ever find another San Antonio,but you never know. From what I've been told, we can't go wrong with any of the places in Colorado that have been mentioned. I'm sure First Robin can point us in the right direction.

I assume Colorado Springs has a Fire House. That was a highlight of the San Antonio trip for a number of people. As a matter of fact, we could make visiting the local Fire House standard operating procedure.

You are so correct, there are other places in Colorado.
Estes Park; A drive up the Big Thompson canyon to a well known tourist town where you can see everything in one day and then what to do with all the time left.

Fort Colins; Mostly just another small place, a drive up the Cache La Pudre Canyon to Rustic Resort (which I used to own) and then what are you going to do with the rest of your time.

Denver; A city that has become way too big, lived there the first seven years of my time in Colorado. Elitch Gardens is an attraction with all kinds of rides, like Disney somewhat. They have a great Art Museum. Both can be done with a day trip from Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs; A place for all taste, Air Force Academy, Will Rogers Shrine, Zoo, Cave of the Winds, Garden of the Gods, SHOPPING, Old Colorado City, Art Museum, lots of great resturants, Cliff Dwelings, The North Pole, Pikes Peak with a road to the top or public transportation to the top. Drive to Cripple Creek to the Casinos and the historic mining town, Day drive up hiway 50 to the Royal Gorge and on to Salida thru the Big Horn Sheep Canyon, Salida has a winery, the largest historic district in Colorado, drive back by way of hiway 285 & 24 past the Collegiet Peaks and the fourteeners, (Mts above 14,000 Feet). We also have the Olympic Center here.You will run out of time before you run out of things to do in Colorado Sprngs. And of Course you have ME in Colorado Springs.

WOW, thanks for all of the great info. I knew you would know what was best for our trip. It looks like Colorado Springs would be the best fit. It would probably be easier to get around there than in Denver and still just be a only a couple of hrs. drive to any of the other places.

The retired Fire Chief was a good friend of mine and he took me on a complete tour of the downtown fire station including where they ate and slept, parking there would be a problem but I can check out other stations that might be able to accomadate all the cars. Another good reason to make Colorado Springs the event city is Red Noland Cadillac, the best service department in all of Colorado and the most welcoming people. Coffee is always available and if they know a large group is coming they will probably make sure there are plenty of donughts.

We would enjoy seeing the station,meeting the guys (Supa Freak loves firemen!) and getting pictures of the cars in front of the station. It would also be nice to stop by Noland Cadillac...we really like doughnuts!

After the Corvette meeting in 2007 at the Silverwood Hotel and Conferance Center in Colorado Springs, the establishment had to close it doors and go out of business. And we thought the MM crowd was rough!!! They have closed and are out of business, I just had to enject more of my humor, no offense to my MM friends.

Yes I also feel Colorado Springs is a great fit for us all. I have been to CO many, many times and love it all. I could mention going up into the mountians to a few resorts to stay, but Colorado Springs may be the right choice for the group with all it has to offer. Denver is not really a choice because if we are in CO then lets get closer to the beauty of it all and Denver is another city. Lets get the feel of the Mountians. I am already excited, can't wait. Can we go now???

Awwwwww, MissySupaBling, you came to Colorado and didn't pick me up to go shopping with you, I could have helped you pick out more jackets and coats to fit in that little trailer Mark is going to buy to pull along behind your X. We could have turned this town upside down, especially if we left Mark at home.

Yes they were converted into a bible study school. It's unfortunate because it was a great place to stay. However, there are a bunch of hotels right on that strip. One of my Moderators at the Corvette Action Center lives in that area and spearheaded the event for us. I'm sure he, and his group would be willing to help out again for the XLR event.

I will White water it! I have done that before on the Colorado river and it was a blast and I laughed till I was sick. Something you only do once or twice, and it is worth it, if you like that sort of thing. It is scary though!

Denver is an hour drive, Salida is two hours and seven minutes and if we set a date to do that I bet I could get them to block off the street by riverside park so we could park all the cars together, I think I still have an in with the Chief of Police. There are also lots of rafting companies in Salida for a white water raft trip if anyone is brave enough to do that, I am sure Photo Girl and Photo Mom would be up to it since they like walking around the 27th floor of a burnt out building on construction scaffolds. There are probably lots more things to do that my poor old mind full of cobwebs just can't think of right now.
